That's the sign on the front door of the rest area on Route 2 in Shelburne, NH. Apparently winter lasted longer than anyone could have predicted.
The building appears to be in good repair.
There are plenty of picnic tables and what look like pits for grilling.
While I was there, a woman out for a hike came by and asked me what this place was. I explained that it was a rest area. She said, "It's not very welcoming is it?"
Rosalind is visiting from New Zealand, staying at a hostel up the road. A tourist. A delightful tourist. A delightful tourist who would have availed herself of maps, information, and probably the bathroom. Instead, she got this.
There was a lot of traffic on Rt. 2 today. Tourism is NH's second largest industry.
Nothing says Welcome to NH quite like this.
"Hitler is lonely. So is God. Hitler is like God."- Hans Frank.
ReplyDeleteThere can be no doubt Susan The Bruce that you went over to Gilead and then arrived at your ideas about how bad New Hampshire does with it's tourist economy and state rest areas.
NH State Government exists to serve and not to provide.
The buildings in Shelburne should be bulldozed and the NH motto sign erected in it's place: "Live Free or Die." And, I'd add a smaller sign below: "Or Leave."
Please feel free with your quality efforts at investigative journalism to state how many "tourists" have actually complained about the lack of facilities in Shelburne, N.H.?
Better yet, since you seem to prefer and be entitled to opulence, sparkling restrooms and Starbucks coffee, perhaps you might be willing to suggest how this type of facility should be financed.....
I'm sure Laura Knoy at NHPR would like to have you on the air with your ideas.
Not at all welcoming. NH un-Rest Stops as well as the whacko's who have taken up residence here all make a lunatic collection of a state that looks and sounds more like chaos.
ReplyDeleteA basic education in Business always includes the subject referred to as "Investment".
ReplyDeleteYou spend a SMALL amount of money now in order to earn a LARGER amount of money in the Future.
The incessant mantra from some of our state politicians is that we
would be much better off if the State was "run like a Business".
Investing in the State's rest areas would Be the PERFECT place to start running the State like a Business.
Rest Assured. Every OTHER State in New England has Already learned to invest in order to keep the local Tourists Happy.
The only question that remains is how long will it take for our Short-sighted and narrow minded Legislature to Fix this long Neglected Problem.
I think there should be a mini-documentary on the various forgotten rest areas of New Hampshire. It would say a lot about the state of our State, its mixed up politics, and the utter unawareness/unconcern among some in NH about how bad this looks to those who pass through our towns.
ReplyDeleteThere can be no doubt that you are obsessed, Steven J. Naziquoter. It sure does make you mad that I have a public voice.
ReplyDeleteNo one reads your blog, do they?
