Political Correctness

The backlash over “political correctness” is really hitting the fan these days. Donald Trump is being lauded as a hero for “telling it like it is” when it comes to Mexicans. His commentary on Senator McCain was less successful. Everywhere one travels on the information highway there is someone whining about the terrible burden of political correctness.

The definition seems like a good place to begin. Webster’s defines PC as: agreeing with the idea that people should be careful to not use language or behave in a way that could offend a particular group of people.

Try as I might, I can’t find fault with that. It sounds pretty simple. It sounds like good manners. Sticking to good manners would go a long way toward solving all kinds of problems.

Political correctness was not a thing when I was growing up. People in my parent’s circle didn’t use racial, ethnic, or religious slurs in public, but in private after a few cocktails…well people might slip and air their bigotry or racism. As I became a teen, I began to experience the misogyny as well. In the early days of the feminist movement, one of my father’s friends told me (quite patronizingly) that if women wanted equality, they needed to earn it. I didn’t have the words or the analysis to adequately respond to that statement. I wasn’t Susan Bruce then.

Prior to the 1970’s people didn’t worry about offending anyone else. It wasn’t even considered. White, protestant, and heterosexual were the norm. Any deviation from that was often remarked upon. Racist and ethnic slurs. Slurs against various religions. Slurs against people with disabilities. Terms like “cripple” and “retard” were accepted without any thought. You know all of the names for Jews. I don’t need to repeat them.  You know all of the slurs used on folks of Latino or African American descent. The latter group has had quite a workout since Barack Obama was elected president. One locally coined term that made it to national news is “jungle alien” as regular readers will recall.

My question is this - what is the upside to using these terms? Are there people who really think this is daring and edgy? Is it a form of tribalism, making it clear to those who are “different” that your white, heterosexual, Christian tribe doesn’t accept people with brown skin, people who love differently from you, or people who believe differently from you? Or is it merely being a big public jerk?

Before anyone starts to complain about “being shut down,” stop. I’m not telling you that you can’t use any terms you want. You are free to do so. In fact, I appreciate it when you use racial slurs or fly the stars and bars from your pickup truck here in New Hampshire. It tells me exactly what you are, and that means I can shun you. I don’t have to work at it because you’ve made it easy for me. I am also telling you that when you use those words, you will be judged and criticized for them. That’s the thing about free speech that bigots never seem to understand. You can say whatever you want, but you are responsible for what you say.

The latest edgy statement of freedumb here seems to be flying the Confederate flag from a pickup truck. Who knew that NH was the cradle of the Confederacy? Those who do it, say they do it to “honor the Confederate dead.” Horse hockey. They do it because they’re racist. It’s that simple. No matter how many black friends they say they have, they do it because they’re racist. No matter how much they claim to love rap or hip-hop, they fly a Confederate flag in NH (or anywhere else) because they’re racist.

We’ve never gotten past racism in the United States because we swept slavery under a rug, and pretended we were done with it after the Civil War. We didn’t fully acknowledge it what it meant to us as a nation. We didn’t acknowledge the reality that people were bought and sold like cattle, and forced to labor for no wages. We didn’t acknowledge or even question what that did to the slaves and their descendants. We never questioned what that did to those who did the buying, selling, and oppressing. White America has made no reparations. The wounds remain unhealed. And the ugliness has reached a fever pitch because there’s a black guy in the White House.

The fortune of this country was built on the backs of slaves. The US would not be the wealthiest country in the world had it not been for slave labor. Until we do face it, get honest with it, and make reparations (whatever that looks like) we aren’t going to move past it. Not when people are still nursing hurt feelings over losing the Civil War and the opportunity to enslave people they consider lesser beings because of the color of their skin.

It’s a pity Lincoln didn’t just let the confederate states go. We wouldn’t have Ted Cruz, Rick Perry, or even Donald Trump running for president right now.

It’s going to take a long time to eradicate prejudice and bigotry. In the meantime, I suggest political correctness. Being polite is seldom a mistake.

Karen Testerman Hosts a 'Welcome Home Gun Totin' Cretins' Party

US Senate candidate Karen Testerman is hosting a welcome home bash for the gun totin' cretins who went out to defend welfare rancher Cliven Bundy's right to graze his cattle on public land and not pay the bill.

Republican New Hampshire Senate candidate Karen Testerman says she will host an event Monday night to welcome home "fellow NH Patriots" who went to Nevada to support controversial cattle rancher Cliven Bundy.
The event is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Salmon Falls Church of Christ in Rochester. Testerman is one of four Republican candidates for U.S. Senate in New Hampshire, along with Scott Brown, Jim Rubens and Bob Smith.
"These men and women did not use violence, broke no laws, caused no damage to property, spoke no insults or vulgarity to any local state or federal authorities, yet they have been branded as 'DOMESTIC TERRORISTS,' by the U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid," Testerman said in a statement. "This is unacceptable. I call upon our sitting Senators to publicly denounce Harry Reid, call on him to apologize and extend a welcome to our fellow Granite Staters."

Yeah, they were regular Boy Scouts. Well, except for the pointing guns at people and planning to use women & children as human shields.

FBI questioning law enforcement about Bundy Militia

Las Vegas TV station KLAS reported Thursday that the FBI has begun interviewing Clark County sheriff's officials in what the news station describes as a "formal investigation into alleged death threats, intimidation and possible weapons violations" on the part of the Bundy militia.

Pointed weapons at law enforcement? Oh, say it ain't so.

These are the same yobbos who were going to use women and children as human shields.

It boggles the mind that  Karen Testerman (who has made a career out of advocating that women serve as involuntary incubators) would be cheering on a bunch of Brave Sir Robins who were ready to have their women and children shot to protect themselves.

Then there's the dishonest narrative behind the story. Cliven Bundy is a deadbeat and a moocher.

As for his claim that his family has been grazin' cattle there for 130 years?

Clark County property records show Bundy’s parents bought the 160-acre ranch where he still lives in 1948, two years after he was born in Bundyville, Ariz. — the same year the Bureau of Land Management was created through executive order by President Harry Truman.
Water rights were also transferred to the ranch itself, but not the federally managed land surrounding it, and court records show the Bundy family began grazing cattle on that land in 1954, when Cliven was 8 years old.
Moocher. This is the guy Karen Testerman is calling a "patriot."
Let's not even get into the issue of Bundy's brilliant social commentary about "the Negro."
Testerman is welcoming home Jerry DeLemus, the teabagger and 9/12er whose wife, well known birther Sue DeLemus announced that Jerry was comin' home to run Strafford County Sheriff.
Funny how these antigummint guys are always so desperate to suck from the taxpayer teat.

TeaStater Jane Cormier Turns Educator

Rep. Jane Cormier of Alton is leading a discussion series entitled "Constitution 101" at the Gilman Library in Alton. From the Laconia Daily Sun:

This course, "The Meaning and History of the Constitution" is a 10 part presentation by Hillsdale College. Rep. Jane Cormier will moderate the classes and discussion, which will include a video and study guide discussion.

Hillsdale College is a private (no gummint funding!) school in Hillsdale, Michigan. The President of the college recently received some attention for his testimony before a subcommittee of the state legislature:

While testifying against the Common Core, which have been adopted in more than 40 states in an effort to standardize education, Arnn said he took issue with the idea of government interfering with educational institutions and went on to describe a letter he had received from the Department of Education shortly after becoming president at Hillsdale. The letter, he told the committee, said his college "violated the standards for diversity because we didn't have enough dark ones, I guess, is what they meant."

These comments led to the now-standard fauxpology:

Several hours after Arnn made his initial statements, Hillsdale College issued an official apology. “No offense was intended by the use of that term except to the offending bureaucrats," read the statement, which was published by MLive. It further said that while Arnn was sorry if offense was taken, his greater concern “is the state-endorsed racism the story illustrates."

In other words, he's sorry that he got negative attention for making the comments, but that's all he's sorry for. In 1984 Hillsdale stopped accepting federal funds, because of affirmative action. In 2007, Hillsdale stopped accepting state funds. In 2010, they issued a Resolution Against Federal Interference, which essentially says, you can't make us take dark ones if we don't wanna. The college advertises on Rush Limbaugh's radio show. The Mission and Moral Commitments document makes clear that this is not a gay-friendly institution.

Hillsdale has a "Statues of Liberty" walk that includes statues of Margaret Thatcher and Saint Ronald Reagan.

The Constitution 101 materials are generated by the Allan P. Kirby Center for Constitutional Studies at Hillsdale, where Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas's wife Ginni is a consultant. Past speakers at their Constitution Day festivities include Paul Ryan and Charles Krauthammer. The Center is closely tied to the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.

Representative Cormier is bringing a slanted curriculum from a college desperate to conceal its bigotry to the public library in Alton. That's no surprise. Rep. Cormier is firmly allied with the Tea Party/John Birch Society/Free Stater faction of our state legislature. The self-styled Constitutional experts of the NH legislature are many. They embrace the Second Amendment and the double triple secret 13th Amendment. The rest of those pesky amendments, eh....not so much.

It amuses me that Cormier is so worshipful of a document (and the men who wrote it) that didn't even consider her a person. I'm further amused by the fact that Cormier and her allies hate all things "public" and "gummint"  - yet they always seem to use public buildings or spaces for their events.  Shouldn't those who want all things privatized find private space to use? Apparently the idea of opening her home to the great unwashed masses held little appeal for Rep. Cormier. Tee hee.

PS I don't in any way intend this as a criticism of the Gilman Library. Our public libraries should be free speech zones, open to all views and speakers.

Updates from Post-Racial Murka

AP/Lewiston Sun photo

In Sabattus, ME a selectmen is finding himself in some (deservedly) hot water:

A Sabattus town official is under federal investigation and facing fierce criticism after he posted a message on Facebook calling for President Obama to be shot and referring to him with a racial slur.
The message said, "Shoot the ..." and included a racial slur.David Marsters, 68, who is running for selectman, says he told Secret Service agents who questioned him Tuesday that he was not threatening the president when he posted the message at 8:17 p.m. Friday. It appeared above a picture of Obama and a link to a story about how some Republican lawmakers think the president deserves to be impeached.
"I think it's a lot of hogwash," Marsters said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "I did not threaten the president. ... I might have used the wrong words. ... I didn't say I was going to do it."
He said his post was taken out of context.
"What I really meant to say is, 'When are we going to get rid of this (expletive),'" he said. "I should have said, 'I hope the bastard dies.'

Can someone explain to me how a thing can be taken out of context when it's what you said?
Marsters is having a big year. He was big news back in March:
SABATTUS, Maine — Retiree David Marsters says there ought to be a law which mandates every Sabattus head of household to own a gun.
He’s not joking.
If each Sabattus home had a gun, “it would provide and protect safety of the city,” Marsters said.

Okay, but:
According to Marsters, felons, those with a history of mental illness and those whose religion would prohibit gun use would be exempt. He acknowledged “there’s not that much crime rate in Sabattus,” but if word spread that every home had guns, robbers would stay away out of town.
Marsters, 68, is a retired police officer from Malden, Mass. He’s a father, a grandfather, and is involved in his local politics, serving on several committees.

Indeed, what a cunning plan. Because EVERYONE knows that robbers never steal guns.

I'm just surprised that a racist gun nut from Massachusetts moved to Maine, instead of moving to NH to run for the state legislature.
